And on some seats I wouldn't be surprised if the results change as postal and declaration votes are counted (one close seat I looked at had an apparent turn out of 55%, compared to other seats with an 85-90% turnout)
I could never figure out the preferential voting system in Australia. Looking at the latest results, the Coalition got almost 10% more than Labor, yet Labor has won 28% more seats. If it was first past the post, it would probably be a minority government or hung parliament. Sometimes that can do a good thing; the government can do less damage.
In West Australia, despite all the draconian measures apparently most people are happy with that because they added more Labor seats. Good luck.
I don't get the numbers either, apparently the preferential voting idea is supposed to better reflect the ideas of the electorate, as it allows people to direct who they would like to see in if their first choice isn't favoured, however, in practice it just results in people thinking that if they don't vote for one of the big parties that their vote is wasted...probably because education is practically non-existent and most Australians don't understand how the system works.
Then you add the AEC giving incorrect information and we're all screwed
I understand how it works. They eliminate the lowest vote person, then distribute the preferences, if no one gets to 51%, they eliminate the next lowest person. They keep doing that until they have a winner. The trouble is that a person who did not get the most primary votes can end up winning. It's like you picked a winner, but no the person didn't actually win. People who vote the woke crowd and the greens will be in store for a rude awakening when they find out that our world can't exist without oil. The petrochemical industry produces so much of what we need from cosmetics, plastics, medications, fuel (of course) and solvents, to name just a few.
Hence the lack of education of the general populace. The system is designed to keep those in power where they are, and make it difficult for those who wish to buck the trend to get up (especially if they aren't backed by someone with dodgy motives and deep pockets), unless someone has really misread their constituents.
And yes, people will be shocked when they realise just how much oil is required for daily life...
McCoullough spoke of this early on, dentists know about hygeine, they gargle daily with iodine in solution frequently and there have been few to no outbreaks for them. And yet they have been mostly silent, in fear of their licenses as well. As for me, I walked out of 2 local shops for the masking and did let them know why as well. This may seem non sequitor, but I do wonder if our acting president (Obama) would be there at Davos if he thought it would not be noticed...our US REPS have betrayed us, and I hope this fight comes right to their front doors.
