Many people wake up in the morning with a sense of dread; another day, another dollar, ho-hum. In reality, these same people want a sense of fulfilment––a sense of betterment––in their lives. I don’t think too many, wake up thinking, “I want to be less of myself and achieve less. The problem is that we don’t know how to reach a higher fulfilment and purpose in our lives.
A recent Wall Street Journal shows that the values that have served Americans so well have been seriously declining for the past 25 years.
The only thing that has increased in value is the quest for more money. Things of a non-material nature like patriotism, religion or having children are seriously declining.
So what is Purpose?
Purpose is the point of our existence. Without purpose, life becomes meaningless. To have a fulfilling purpose, one needs to get inspired about something. With a clearly defined purpose, we have a master plan for our life. With a purpose, you want to leave a legacy and make a difference in the world. It is an inherent human need.
One of the problems with the past three years of the Covid pandemic was not just vaccine injury and being forced to wear masks. It was the spiritual disintegration of society. After all, how inspiring can watching Netflix all day be? Or ruminating about losing autonomy when not being able to go outside for any length of time.
Purpose is the vision and inspiration, while passion is the physical manifestation of an idea. Everyone has a purpose. If your point of existence is to watch TV all day, that is your purpose. If you spend your time, energy, and money playing golf, that is your purpose. If you accumulate wealth to donate a good portion to philanthropic causes, that is also your purpose. In other words, your life demonstrates your purpose.
The good news is that there are benefits to having a grand purpose, including a greater chance for longevity.It’s one thing to say you are going to live a life of purpose, but how do we create such a life?
