Where Do You Stand On The Wellness Barometer?
When most people think of wellness, they think of their outward physical health––how they feel. They don’t appreciate that wellness encompasses every facet of our lives. Like a barometer that measures pressure, there is a wellness scale that measures our status as human beings. Wellness or wholeness is a fully functioning organism. Dis-ease is a lack of normal function and there is a spectrum of dysfunction.
Wellness is not just about your physical health but also encompasses areas of life such as spirituality and relationships. No one is 100% adept in all these areas. In what areas we express our wellness is determined by our deep-seated values, some of which stem from childhood. The more we express health, the more we will have success during our lifetime. The better we function physically, the more we can succeed in other areas, such as our relationships and jobs. For example, an unwell mother or father may be snappy at their kids, even if they aren’t obviously sick. Chemical imbalance can affect our moods and emotions.
How we manifest wellness is a like a bank account. Obviously, in your financial life, deposits into your account, whether adding cash or accumulating assets, means you are putting in more than you are withdrawing. We can use the withdrawal and deposit analogy in all areas of life.
When we make health deposits, we add value. Things like balanced healthy eating, regular exercise, meditation and maintaining a sound nervous system grow wellness. The detractors are things like trauma, emotional stress, drugs and smoking. So where are you on the scale?
One factor that prevents us from achieving health is living outside-in instead of inside-out lives. Another way of expressing it is living natural as opposed to unnatural lives.
