Life Is About The Harmonizing Of Neural Tone
What is Life?
A quote attributed to Mark Twain is, “Life is just one damn thing after another.” It feels that way sometimes. On a more physiological level, life has to do with tone. In fact, Daniel David Palmer (DD), the father of Chiropractic, stated the following:
“Life is the expression of tone. In that sentence is the basic principle of Chiropractic. The tone is the normal degree of nerve tension. Tone is expressed in functions by the normal elasticity, activity, strength and excitability of the various organs, as observed in a state of health. Consequently, the cause of the disease is any variation of tone–– nerves too tense or too slack.”
We must remember this statement was made in the late 1800s. While the details may be less than 100% correct, the principle is valid. Most of this has been forgotten in Chiropractic. The focus has been on “bones out of place,” causing nerve pressure, restriction of spinal joint movement, which irritates the nervous system, and damage to local tissues, causing scarring.
The tone is much deeper than this. It represents how a structure vibrates or resonates. The nerves in your body vibrate at specific frequencies.
Tension is a magnetic, electrical and energy system. It is the underlying concept of what is our basic physiology. This brings us to homeostasis, the tendency of the body to get itself into a state of equilibrium.
All organs, tissues and systems depend on your neural tone––the oscillation of the nerve impulses that transmit information throughout the body. Health occurs when the neural tone is operating in its optimal range. We can often see the physical manifestations such as electrical, chemical, biomechanical and structural changes.
Another way to think of it is that nerve fibres are like guitar strings.
If you tighten or loosen the strings, you change the tone—how it sounds. When nerves are under abnormal tension, they alter the frequency, which varies function in the body. Misalignments change the stress because of the close association between the spinal vertebrae and the nerves, altering tone and health.
A range of indicators can demonstrate an alteration of nerve tone.
