Chiropractic Care For Children Should Be Routine - But It's Not
Over the years, many parents decided to have their children see a chiropractor. For some reason, some people, especially in the medical community, feel this is outlandish. The reason is because of the presumption that you have to be suffering from back pain or neck pain to see a chiropractor. The other idea is that you must be older to tolerate chiropractic adjustments.
Have you been to a dentist? Dentistry, by its very nature, is often painful. Often you need injections of anaesthetics to be able to contend with the procedures. We certainly don't advocate neglecting teeth.
However, when it comes to spinal health, we shouldn't neglect it in childhood. This is not only pushed by some in the medical community but also by some chiropractic licensing boards. It's all supposedly in the name of 'safety'. Where have we heard that before?
The fact is that chiropractors have been seeing children for decades without incident. Anything adverse reactions that have occurred are much less than medical treatment. Licensed chiropractors are properly trained to look after those under 18.
Unfortunately, today, many children suffer from poor health. Conditions are going on that I never saw in the early 1970s when I started practising.
Have a look at the following facts.
Do these statistics reflect health? There is often a cognitive dissonance when it comes to health. We assume we're healthy if we're not sick with a cold or influenza. So if a child has asthma and keeps it at bay with a Ventolin puffer, that is unhealthy; or if a child is autistic and is living on medication, that is unhealthy. It may suppress symptoms, but that is not healthy. If one suffers from headaches and takes strong painkillers, the headache may go, but the underlying problem remains. Suppression of symptoms or lack of symptoms does not necessarily indicate health.
So why should children be checked by a chiropractor? There is an old saying:
That photo was taken near Grenough a town in Western Australia. A strong sea breeze blows through the area regularly causing growing trees to bent along the direction of the wind. Outside forces influence the posture of the mature tree. Similarly, outside forces applied to the human spine cause distortion and because of the righting reflex of the body, curves will develop as a compensation.
The first place where spinal damage with subluxation can occur is during the Birth Process. If you see how much force can be applied at birth, you can understand how damage can occur. From a spinal concern the most susceptible is the neck region.
