In a previous newsletter, I spoke of balanced thinking as opposed to positive thinking. At every level, there is a duality or a synthesis of opposites. The universe works that way; we must remember that this principle applies to our bodies.
The body is constantly attempting to bring everything into equilibrium. We call this homeostasis. It is the maintenance of a balanced system. No matter what you do, you can’t have a one-sided state; the body always brings you back to equilibrium.
So when we speak of health, we are not just about feeling good––one-sided pleasure. Health also encompasses pain. If you injure yourself, what happens? You get pain. What is that pain doing? It is a feedback mechanism to allow your body to heal. If you sprain an ankle and it’s painful to walk, the body’s internal system protects you so that healing can take place.
Everywhere we perceive a dichotomy of positive and negative, but in actuality, both are present. You may express one but suppress the other. We think of health as life, but actual health is life and death. You are constantly dying; it manifests as the body killing its own cells, known as autophagy. The body is breaking down cells while simultaneously creating new ones.
You might say that Wellness = ½ life and ½ death.
Your metabolism consists of anabolism (building up) and catabolism (breaking down). You have flexor muscles and extensors. Insulin reduces blood sugar; glucagon increases it.
Impulses flow in two directions: afferent (to the brain) - efferent (from the brain)
Previously I stated that we each have an altruistic and a narcissistic side. This occurs on the physical plane as well. Your altruistic system is your motor system, those nerves that cause your muscles to act. Your narcissistic side is your sensory nerves through which you receive information. Both sides are necessary.
You have a Right brain and a Left brain.
Ultimately your brain and nervous system function as an integrative system of two halves.
