3 Common Reasons People See A Chiropractor
You probably would only know this man's name if you were in the chiropractic community. He was Harvey Lillard, the first chiropractic patient in 1895. Harvey worked as a janitor in a building in Davenport, Iowa, where a man named Daniel David Palmer had an office.
D.D. had been delving into various healing methods, including a particular interest in the human spine.
One day D.D. was talking to Lillard and found that he had been deaf for 17 years. This occurred after he had bent over and felt some pop in his upper back. Lillard allowed D.D. to examine him, and D.D. found a lump that felt like a vertebra had been displaced. After a few attempts at pushing or adjusting the bump, Lillard's hearing was restored.
At first, D.D. thought he had stumbled upon the cure for deafness. News travelled quickly about Harvey Lillard's miraculous recovery, and deaf individuals came from around to be "cured." However, not everyone who was deaf had their hearing restored. Instead, they reported recovery of other disorders plaguing them. This is when D.D. knew he had stumbled onto something great.
Back and Neck Pain
This is the most common reason people seek the services of a chiropractor. It didn't start that way. We must remember that in the early 1900s, medicine was relatively primitive in many ways. There were no antibiotics, psychotropic drugs or modern surgical procedures. So people in the early days, through word of mouth, sought out chiropractors and had their health restored. Many have said if medicine got sick people well, they would never have sought the services of a chiropractor.
Somehow over the years, chiropractic morphed into a treatment for back pain. This is the fault of chiropractors and some chiropractic institutions that failed to honour the original philosophy.
Yes, chiropractic has helped millions with back pain, often as a last resort, but what chiropractic does is remove spinal nerve interference, which itself results in dis-ease. We need to differentiate dis-ease from disease. Dis-ease means a lack of ease, harmony or normal function in the body. The principle is that a body that works better can heal and be restorative.
Over the past several decades, I have seen many with varied conditions. While many may not associate the next two with chiropractic, they are common reasons people seek chiropractic care.
